In a tough category, Sherrie Silver took home the prize for best choreography at this year’s VMAs fighting off tough competition from the likes of Jaquel Knight (APESH*T) and Phil Tayag (Finesse).
The British choreographer crafted traditional African moves for her dance crew and Childish Gambino to follow in his iconic video for “This Is America”. The video has acted as a catalyst for an Afro-influenced dance style that has permeated pop culture in the US and beyond; with the likes of Ciara, Omarion and other prominent figures adopting the dance moves into the choreography for their music.
Sherrie Silver has been in hot demand ever since the release of the video which has generated well in excess of 370 million views on YouTube just a few months after its release.
Expect to see more from Sherrie in the near future as she leads the way of an African dance movement that is growing in popularity and cultural impact.
